#PreSonuSphere Presenter: Martin Atkins!

MARTIN ATKINS
Presenting in the Hartley Vey Workshop Theatre on Friday, Oct 25 at 3:30 p.m.

Prepare for the Worst…and Other Cheerful Insights from Industry Legend Martin Atkins

Martin Atkins’ three decades in the music business spans genres, borders and industries. Having experience in nearly every aspect of record production and promotion has given him a unique perspective not only on where the music industry is currently, but where it’s going in the future. And basically things are grim unless you embrace new promotion, distribution, and monetization methods. This presentation is less a commercial for Nimbit than it is a blueprint for prospering in a new world.

Atkins has been a member of Public Image Ltd. and Ministry, and has collaborated with Nine Inch Nails. His distinguished speaking resume includes: SXSW, Warped Tour, CMJ, New Music Seminar, Unconvention, NAMM, By:Larm, Dfest, USC, Drexel, , Full Sail, Weiden + Kennedy, Chicago Cultural Center and many more. We’re all glad he can now add PreSonuSphere to this prestigious list.

Making the Switch: Confessions of an Ex-Pro Tools User

Think it’s hard to climb out of the Pro Tools rut? Others have kicked the habit and made the timely switch to Studio One—you can too! Founder of the popular web site homestudiocorner.com, Joe Gilder has been there and done that, and has come up with a smooth transition plan that builds on users’ years of Pro Tool experience, and takes full advantage of Studio One’s improved workflow and expanded features. Twelve-step your way in and sit down!

Joe Gilder is a freelance recording engineer and musician from Nashville. He studied recording at Middle Tennessee State University and went on to work for top music gear retailer Sweetwater Sound. While there, he became frustrated with the lack of training for home recording studio enthusiasts, so in 2009 he founded HomeStudioCorner.com, a website dedicated to helping people make better recordings.

#PreSonuSphere Presenter: Steve Savanyu!

STEVE SAVANYU
Presenting in the Hartley/Vey Studio Theatre on Friday Oct. 25, 1:30 p.m.
The Right Microphone for The Job

Nobody ever has enough microphones. But  Audio-Technica guru Steve Savanyu isn’t here to sell you more mics. He’s here to show you how to intelligently use the ones you already have—which microphones to pick for various live and recording applications, and equally importantly, where to place them. An accomplished presenter and teacher, Steve has over 35 years of professional audio production experience in live sound, contracting, studio, and broadcast applications.

Steve is recognized as an InfoComm Academy adjunct faculty member and teaches audio-production crses at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. He’s also the Director of Educational Services at Audio-Technica, and all-around supreme guy.

Regarding PreSonuSphere, Steve has a lot to say:

“PreSonuSphere is a great opportunity to learn and share tips and techniques on how to get the most out of latest digital recording and live sound technology. It is also fun to see the latest and greatest products in action. I have participated since the very first one, both as an attendee and presenter. The hospitality (and the Jambalaya) is worth the price of admission alone.”

“My favorite fun memory was last year during the Saturday night event when John Mills was doing a live mixing demonstration in the Manship Theater. Rick and other execs were live on stage. There was a POV (point of view) camera facing down on the StudioLive 24.4.2 console projecting the console surface image on two large screens at the stage. This way the audience could see what John was doing with the console. Someone made the comment about John’s hands on the console (That was all you could see.) I stood behind John and reached in every so often so there was a third and fourth hand on the screen. The hands would smack each other and poke at each other. The crowd roared and we were laughing out loud.

“It is a pleasure to participate in this event and be a part of the “family” of users. To quote Don Davis (who founded the original Syn Aud Con audio training program)  ‘I was walking down the street and I had a dollar… I met a man who also had a dollar. We exchanged dollars and both walked away with a dollar. Later,  I was walking down another street and had an idea. I met a man who also had an idea. We exchanged ideas and both walked away with two ideas.’”

“PreSonuSphere is a street of ideas! Let’s meet and exchange; see you in October!

Deep Inside Studio One: Advanced Production

Finally! We get to see how a crazy person works, as we take a peek inside the unpredictable mind of steadyb. While he is not known for sharing his toys, steadyb will share his recording, mixing and mastering secrets used in the production of the album Proud to be American. Learn the ways of the force with steadyb while he breaks down the Studio One approach for the disorganized and scatter-brained, and how Studio One allows the freedom to be spontaneous to achieve amazing results. As steadyb says: “In the end, it is only the results that matter, not what you had to do to get there.”

A 20-year veteran of the music industry, steadyb has worked for industry leaders like Apple, Fostex, and Alesis before joining PreSonus as a Technology Evangelist. He’s toured the world as a professional keyboardist, and has credits as an audio mixer and sound editor for shows on the History Channel and HGTV.

When prompted for some highlights of PreSonuSpheres past, steadyb notes the following: “I like the food.”

#PreSonuSphere Presenter: John Storyk!

JOHN STORYK

Presenting in the Hartley/Vey Workshop Theatre on Saturday, October 26 at 1:00 p.m.

Look What the Storyk Brought: Small Venue Designs With the Man Who Practically Invented Studio Design

Okay, let’s put it this way. This is probably the only chance you’re ever going to get to learn about recording-studio design from one of the world’s most accomplished studio architect/acousticians. And he’s aware that you don’t have $100,000 to spend. This will be a practical insight into creating a project studio on a limited budget by designing it correctly right from the start. Topics include overall design geometry, acoustic volumes, windows, floor and wall surfaces, and isolation methods.

John is a registered architect and acoustician, and a founding partner of Walters-Storyk Design Group. He has provided facility planning, acoustical, and systems-design services for the professional audio-video production and performance community since the 1969 completion of Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios in New York City. John received his architectural studies at Princeton and Columbia Universities. As an independent designer, engineer, and principal of WSDG, he has been responsible for over 3,000 world-class audio-video production facilities, including studios, radio stations, video suites, entertainment clubs, and theaters. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Audio Engineering Society (AES), and Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and is a frequent contributor to AES convention papers and professional industry periodicals.

John is a frequent lecturer at schools throughout the nation and has established courses in acoustics at Full Sail (Orlando) and Ex’Pression Center for the Media Arts (San Francisco), while maintaining adjunct professor status in Acoustics and Studio Design at the Berklee College of Music (Boston) and Stevens Institute (New Jersey).

“Within minutes of leaving last year’s PreSonusSphere, I asked to return,” John says. “The few days were very special—just the right mix of technology, education, music and food—hosted by a terrific company that has a great mission: accurate audio at affordable prices!

“We at WSDG are honored to participate again in this event,  we promise to bring even more interesting information about the environments that accompany the technology and content we all admire.”
