StudioLive and Vic Thomas–MVPs of the Big Game

SuperBowlIt’s always exciting to see where PreSonus gear shows up all over the world through social media and other various ways. But when PreSonus shows up at the biggest, most watched sporting event of the year, we can’t help but share!  Here’s what PreSonus fan and sound reinforcement engineer Vic Thomas had to say about using PreSonus StudioLive at the the big game last week!

“The PreSonus StudioLive was used by the NFL Network at their Digital Media Set, The Huddle, in Super Bowl City,” says Vic. “Our set was located at Justin Herman Plaza in the heart of Super Bowl City in downtown San Francisco. We were one of four sights that did interactive hits back to NFL Network’s control room at Culver City for integration into all there social networking channels.”

On set, the large crowd proved to create somewhat of a challenge. With 34 years of experience, Thomas knew exactly what to do. “We had up to four talents on set, using RF microphones, which had to be routed directly to Culver City to be mixed into the show. The XMAX preamps proved to be vital, as I had to send each microphone, with no EQ or processing. For this I used the direct out function of the insert point of each channel. The quality and headroom of the preamps handled the changes of the talent’s levels masterfully. You can imagine with the cheering crowds behind them how their levels fluctuated.”

Thomas goes on to say, “I also had four mix minus, IFB feeds coming to me from Culver City. An IFB feed is an Interruptible Fold Back that is fed to the talent via an earpiece so they can hear program minus themselves, as well as the producer in Culver City directing them. You can probably call it an in-ear monitor mix with a cueing function.”

“The StudioLive proved great for this as I could mix each individual IFB to the talent’s taste and send it to their IFBs using the group outs. This gave me the option of having compression and EQ on each incoming feed. This was critical, as I needed to safeguard each of the talents’ hearing. They appreciated that.”

Thomas’s experience in San Fransisco highlights the ease of use and versatility of the StudioLive family. “The StudioLive made a long week very easy and definitely made my job a lot less complicated.”

Rational Acoustics Smaart Basics Course Coming to PreSonus HQ in Baton Rouge, Aug. 10-11—Sign up here

Our good friend Chris Tsanjoures from Rational Acoustics will be in Baton Rouge to teach his Smaart Basics class at the PreSonus world headquarters on August 10 and 11. The class is open to the public – so if you’ve been wanting to step up your audio game using the full Smaart v.7 software  – this is an opportunity that you do not want to miss. For the uninitiated, Smaart is a dual-channel, FFT-based software platform we use in our work as audio engineers to view the frequency content of signals or measure the response of our loudspeaker systems. If you’ve used the RM or StudioLive software control applications, you’ve already had a glimpse at some very basic Smaart Measurement Technology features – now is your chance to start using Smaart v.7 like a Pro!

The Smaart Basics class curriculum covers the configuration, operation, and fundamental concepts of RTA, Spectrograph, Transfer Function and Impulse Response measurements. At the completion of the course, each attendee will have been given a functional knowledge of how Smaart operates as a tool and how to use it to perform essential system engineering tasks such as loudspeaker equalization, delay systems alignment, subwoofer alignment/arraying, multi-position live averaging and much much more.

Oh, and in true PreSonus tradition, we’ll see to it that every attendee will be well-fed.

SAE Chicago Riff to Release Event a Smashing Success

image002International Sales Director of Mystery Mark Williams just got back from an incredibly successful trip to Chicago, where he and Martin Atkins hosted a PreSonus Riff to Release clinic focusing on production in Studio One and Nimbit, and followed it up by attending—and recording—the Cold Waves Music Festival, which included Front 242, Fear Factory, Die Krupps, and many more stalwart ambassadors of rivethead culture. More on that in this blog post.

The three-hour Riff-to-Release clinic at SAE Chicago boasted standing-room-only attendance—every chair was taken, and folks who didn’t show up early wound up sitting and standing in the aisles. In a flash of brilliance, SAE streamed video of the presentation into a networked room nearby to accomodate the spillover.

Longime PreSonus forum big dawg and bacon enthusiast Johnny Geib of Home Studio Trainer, presented with Mark on the Studio One portion of the presentation. Blake Novia, a student at SAE, recorded vocals into Studio One, and Johnny and Mark produced, mixed, mastered, and released the recording on Nimbit, all within the span of the presentation.

Don’t believe me? You can get the track here: http://www.nimbitmusic.com/blakenovia1.

Each audience member walked away with a Studio One Artist license and a 90-day Nimbit premium account. Thanks to all who came out and helped make this happen—we should really do this again sometime.

Mark shot a LOT of video on this trip—you’ll find it popping up on PreSonus’ blog and social media platforms sooner than later.
